Before coming to Peru I was aware of the effects the change in altitude could cause. I was also aware of the local cure for such effects. You can find coca leaves at every tourist trap in the area, and you’ll see people tuck the small green leaves into their cheek like tobacco. For the more ladilike way of warding off headaches, dizziness, and other altitude effects, you can make a green tea from the same leaves. Since I’m prohibited by law to make this tea a souvineer, this picture will have to suffice. See, some may be inclined to use the coca leaves to make a certain drug. I would rather enjoy it as a refreshing and medicinal beverage, served best with homemade cookies.
