Travel has been a pretty important part of my life for as long as I can remember. Since I was a baby, my family would travel to the British Virgin Islands, our home away from home. After college, I took my first trip to Europe. Then when family started moving abroad, I just had to go visit! The craziness of my twenties led me to take a month long World Wonders tour, and I’ve been dedicated to exercising my passport ever since.
For me, the world has been a place to explore and experience culture. Strolling down cobblestone streets, people-watching from cafes, tasting new foods, learning new languages. While I’ve had some scary experiences, it’s all made for interesting stories. Plus, the good has definitely outweighed the bad. I’ve been extremely lucky.
Breaking Bad News
If you watch the news, you know the world can be a scary place. People who go about their normal day, exploring and experiencing life, have that right taken away from them by terrorists. What follows is story after story about the search for the ones responsible. What should follow are the stories of the explorers–the ones who were simply experiencing life–and how the survivors are surviving. How the world is surviving.
Just Keep Traveling
Let’s talk more about the love than about the loss. More about the joy of travel than fearing it. Of course, we should all be aware of our surroundings. We should be doing this anyway when we travel. If we live in fear, we lose. Unfortunately, there have always been people who thrive on inflicting fear. Let’s let them lose for a while. Let’s keep traveling, exploring, experiencing, exercising our right to move freely around the world and dedicate our lives to living without fear.
